Apply Within the U.S.: Canadian and Mexican citizens can apply for TN status within the U.S. through a change of status or extension of stay with USCIS.

Apply Outside of the U.S.: Canadians can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with supporting documents (no visa stamp required); Mexicans must apply at a U.S. consulate to obtain a TN visa before entering the U.S.

Nonimmigrant Intent Required: TN visa holders must maintain the intent to return home and cannot have dual intent like H-1B holders.

Duration: Up to 3 years, with unlimited renewals in 3-year increments.
